Postgraduate study in law

MASTER OF LAWS (LLM) DEGREE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS LAW (DISTANCE LEARNING), CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

GIALS offers teaching and complementary academic support to students interested in pursuing the degree of Master of Laws in International Business Law which is offered via Distance Learning by City, University of London. This distance learning LLM provides candidates with the legal skills and knowledge to succeed in today’s global business environment. The Institute works in collaboration with City, University of London to offer extra-curricular activities (including talks, seminars, masterclasses, networking events, etc). We also collaborate in research, especially projects with a Ghanaian or African context.

Enrolment requirements

Applicants should normally hold a first degree in Law from a recognised university (lower second class honours UK-standard or higher). Applicants with honours degrees or equivalent in a subject other than Law are also encouraged to apply and will be considered. An appropriate professional

qualification and relevant experience may also be acceptable. Also, those without formal qualifications but who have more than ten years relevant working experience may be considered for admission on a case-by- case basis. Applicants who are recommended by GIALS will be properly considered.

Structure and Content

The distance learning LLM in International Business Law programme consists of taught modules of 150 credits (five modules at 30 credits each) and a compulsory Dissertation module of 30 credits.

In the first academic term, all students are required to take the Core module, Foundations of Law in International Business.

Upon successful completion of the Core module, a candidate will select any further four taught modules from the range of available subjects. Candidates are free to take one or two modules each academic term. Currently, available options are:

1. Dispute resolution in international commerce
2. E-commerce law
3. International corporation law
4. International investment law
5. Law of international trade
6. Legal aspects of international finance
7. Privacy and data protection laws
8. Regulation of information technology and intellectual property
9. Energy Law (subject to validation).

All modules run over a period of 10 weeks (10 units). Each module requires approximately 300 hours of study and students will normally spend between 25 and 30 hours a week on each module, comprised mainly of self-directed and on-line hours. Typically, once all taught modules have been successfully completed, students will be required to complete a 10,000-word Dissertation. This requirement reflects the concerns of employers that an LLM graduate should display a high standard of competence in research and a capacity for original thought. Dissertation supervision will be undertaken by internal members of staff and visiting lecturers ensuring that expert guidance is available to all. Where it is appropriate for a candidate to be supervised by a visiting lecturer, because of the subject area of the dissertation, the student should ensure that they have agreed in advance methods of communication including the mode and frequency of contact.

Minimum: 18 months
Maximum: 5 years
The course consists of six modules in total. The minimum length of the LLM programme is 18 months; the maximum five years.

Fees and fee structure

The fees for September 2017 enrolment are £9,000 for the full course, payable on a module by module basis. The fee for each individual module is £1,500. All candidates enrolling through GIALS will be given 10% discount (of the full fee) which would be deducted from the final module (usually the Research Dissertation module). Highly qualified students are also eligible to be considered for full scholarships and should indicate on their applications that they wish to be so considered.
